Binary Sunset

extras

This fanlisting is technically devoted to the track, The Hologram - Binary Sunset, from the soundtrack to Star Wars: A New Hope. However, this theme has been interwoven into every Star Wars film, including the upcoming Revenge of the Sith, and has come to be known as one of the most profound and moving melodies that composer John Williams has ever crafted. That's why this fanlisting has a dual name; it's devoted to the portion of that one particular track, but beyond that, it's devoted to this really crucial and powerful theme that helps to tie the entire saga together musically.

We as viewers and listeners are first introduced to it upon seeing Luke Skywalker step out of the main complex of the moisture farm and stare off into the distance at the dazzling binary sunset over the vast Tatooine desert, frustrated with the lack of adventure in his life and the lack of control he has over his future, and longing to jump headfirst into the bigger picture and to move his life forward, to explore all the possibilities out there, and to leave his confining home and lifestyle as a moisture farmer's nephew. As he stares at the sunset, viewers are immediately able to relate to him, due to the muted but very heartfelt and empathetic melody that accompanies the scene.

This melody makes very important appearances throughout all the films. It's better known as the Force theme, since it's presented in conjunction with many of the Jedi or in situations very relevant to Jedi and the Force. It's a theme of deep introspection, befitting the Jedi order and the benign flow and will of the Force.
